Levis used two types of countermark: a banner shape punch, and a straight bar punch. Both punch types consist of raised letters in relief.
Hallmark of William Levis (1785 - 1842), a 19th century Lancaster silversmith circa 1825-1837. I own several silver items made by Levis.
In the book "Silversmiths of Lancaster, Pennsylvania 1730 – 1850", William Levis is listed on page 81 as follows:
WILLIAM LEVIS b. 1785 d. 1842
-- (working in) Philadelphia 1810-1814
-- (working in) Lancaster 1825-1837
The tax record for 1825 lists William Levis as a dyer (he advertised as a dyer on East King Street in the Lancaster Journal of April 18, 1828); in 1830 he is called a dyer and silversmith, and from 1832 through 1837 his occupation is given as silversmith only. Presumably he is the same silversmith who appeared in the Philadelphia directory from 1810 to 1814. The Intelligencer and Journal for November 1, 1842 carried a notice of the death, on October 18, of "Mr. Wm. Levis, late of this city, aged 57 years". So it appears that Levis worked in Lancaster when he countermarked most, if not all, of the coins.
