Abraham Lincoln
successfully led the Nation out of the Civil War, preserving the Union and ending slavery. In recognition of his role as President, an image of Lincoln, designed by Victor D. Brenner, has been featured on the one-cent coin since 1909, the 100th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. The first of the four new reverse designs represents the “Birthplace” of President Lincoln, reflecting his birth and early childhood in LaRue County, Kentucky.
