Piedmont and Northern is a former Electric Interurban railroad, rich in history, that was developed by predecessors of Duke Power Company to serve the people of North Carolina and to provide service the textile industry. Later, this segment was owned and operated by Seaboard Coast Line.
In 2012 the State of North Carolina rehabilitated the 14 mile line in hopes of attracting business to the Gaston County area. Patriot Rail was awarded the contract to operate the line.
